What is a Random Team Generator?
A random team generator takes a list of names and divides them into balanced groups at random. Instead of manually picking teams — which almost always introduces bias, whether intentional or not — a random generator ensures every possible grouping has an equal chance of occurring.
Our tool gives you two modes: split by number of teams, or split by team size. You can regenerate as many times as you like, copy results to your clipboard, and even name your teams.
How to Use the Team Generator
- Type or paste your names into the input box — one name per line.
- Choose your split mode: Number of teams or Team size.
- Set how many teams you want, or how many people per team.
- Hit Generate Teams and your groups appear instantly.
- Not happy with the split? Hit Shuffle Again for a fresh random draw.
- Click Copy All to copy the teams to your clipboard.

Common Questions
How does the random team generator work?
You enter a list of names — one per line — and choose how many teams you want. The tool shuffles the names using a random algorithm and distributes them as evenly as possible across all teams. If the names don't divide equally, some teams will have one extra member.
Can I generate teams by size instead of number of teams?
Yes. Switch to 'By team size' mode and enter how many people you want per team. The tool will calculate how many teams are needed and distribute the names accordingly.
Are the teams truly random?
Yes. Every generation uses a Fisher-Yates shuffle — the gold standard for unbiased random ordering. Each possible arrangement of names has an equal probability of being selected.
Can I copy or share the results?
Yes. After generating teams you can copy all results to your clipboard with one click. Each team is clearly labelled so you can paste it directly into a message, document, or spreadsheet.
Are my names stored anywhere?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. Your names are never sent to any server, stored, or tracked in any way.
