What is a Random Name Picker?

A random name picker is a free tool that selects one name at random from a list you provide. Instead of drawing names from a hat or flipping through a spreadsheet, you simply type your names in, hit spin or pick, and get a fair, unbiased result instantly.

Our tool gives you two ways to pick: a spin wheel for a visual, animated experience — great for classrooms and live events — or a list picker if you just want a quick result without the fanfare. Both use a truly random algorithm so every name has an equal chance of being selected.

How to Use the Name Picker Wheel

  1. Type your names into the input box — one name per line.
  2. Choose your mode: Spin Wheel for the animated experience, or List Picker for an instant result.
  3. Optionally enable Remove winner after pick to eliminate each picked name from future rounds.
  4. Hit Spin or Pick a Random Name — the winner appears in a popup with a victory sound.
  5. Your pick history is saved so you can track all previous results.

Ways to Use a Name Picker

Classroom activities

Teachers use it to call on students randomly — no more always picking the same hands.

Paste your entrants, spin, and pick a winner fairly. Screenshot the result as proof.

Team assignments

Assign tasks, roles, or presentation order without any debate about who goes first.

Use it for truth or dare, deciding who pays for dinner, or any group decision.

Office decisions

Who brings snacks this week? Who leads the meeting? Let the wheel decide.

Sports drafts

Random team selection for lunch leagues, fantasy drafts, or casual games.

Common Questions

Is the random name picker really fair?

Yes. The tool uses JavaScript's built-in random number generator which gives every name an equal probability of being selected. No name is favoured over another.

How many names can I add?

There is no hard limit. The wheel works well with 2 to 20 names. For larger lists, the list picker mode is more practical since names become small on the wheel at high counts.

What does "Remove winner after pick" do?

When this toggle is on, each picked name is automatically removed from the pool after being selected. This is useful for running elimination rounds, picking a ranked order, or ensuring no one is picked twice in a giveaway.

Are my names saved or stored anywhere?

No. Everything runs directly in your browser. Your names are never sent to a server, stored, or tracked in any way.

Does it work on mobile?

Yes. The tool is fully responsive and works on phones, tablets, and desktops. The wheel and list picker both adapt to smaller screens automatically.
